Sandi Village

Sandi Village that has maintained the old appearances of the hills at the back of the hometown that are increasingly disappearing in the memories of people living in urban centers is becoming highly popular. In particular, areas around the Sandi Village continues to exercise numerous and unique folk cultures including Tapje, Sanshinje, Seongjugut, Ilnorae, etc, and is referred to as the ‘treasure chest of folk cultures’.

Sandi Village is situated northeast of Gyejok Mt., lower west of Seongjae and just south of the Apsan, and its name was derived from the old name of Sandui (behind the mountain) or Sanbuk (north of the montain) since it is a village at the rear of the Gyejok Mt. Since the northern valley of Gyejok Mt. is narrow and long, it is also referred to as Yeoldu (12) Sandi since it extends from the Gyejok Mt. in Jang-dong to Hayongho in Yongho-dong. This means that there are 12 villages in the valley at the back of the Gyejok Mt., the Sandi Village is situated at the foremost upper part of the Gyejok Mt. valley among them.

Tapje held at the Sandi Village,, which was designated as Intangible Cultural Asset No. 5 of the Daejeon Metropolitan City on July 21, 1998 is one of local folk beliefs of praying for well-being and good harvest of the village to the Daedongshin of the village around the first full moon of the lunar New Year. There is a pair of stone pagoda, referred to as grandfather and grandmother pagoda stand at the entry point of the Sandi Village to play the role of Seonangshin that protects and guards the village.
